Neat way to get an HMI up and running quickly, but limitations quickly become apparent, mostly in the software that doesn't allow one to work around any of the fairly fundamental limitations of the pre-defined control element. Examples: although numeric readouts allow you to specify where to place the decimal point in a fixed-point parameter, analog meters and bar-graphs don't, which means extra overhead in the PLC and an extra memory location. The touch screen only works for pre-defined "pushbuttons" but not for other elements. Given the tiny display area of the micro panel, it would be nice to let the user touch a graphical readout of some sort and bring up a screen with more detail about that parameter or process. All elements have a programmable "visibility" option. Why not a "touch" option as well? There are other things that would be trivial for the designers to do in software, but are awkward or impossible now because they didn't include them. Another issue is the serial interface. I can understand not including Ethernet on the low-end units, although the way things are going, everything will need Ethernet soon, but I spent many days trying to put the panel on the network to connect to a DL06, using a BB-elec RS232/Ethernet bridge, and a serial-to-TCP converter running on a computer, with no success. The bridge alone was problematic, possibly because of timing issues. The DL06 should comprehend modbus TCP, and the various parts of the system that I looked at seemed to have data in the correct format, but I never could get it to work. I understand the intent of the micro panel is to use a simple serial link only, but we really need a low-end HMI with built-in Ethernet. The bottom line is this device is quick and easy if you want to do something simple that's within the limited range of what it was intended to do, but don't try to get clever with it.

Good value for entering data. Can move through screen to fast and easy. color on screens show machine state fast and easy. red,alarm green,all systems normal. yellow, manual mode. and so on. Great for machines that run many setups. change over at touch of button or screen. RJ12 cord goes in tite spots with out having to solder new end on.

This is the fourth EA1-S3ML that I have purchased in the last two (2) years to replace ones that have failed. One was under warranty and Automationdirect replaced it quickly. The other three were not under warranty. I would think that the life expectancy would be better.

Took several hours to get this to work. Turns out that a driver is needed for the cable! After I located a driver on the AD website , I found that the driver came with the programming software download for the Click PLC I had purchased. Would be nice if a note was included to that effect in the box with the cable. Other than that issue, the cable has worked fine and I am satisfied with it's performance.

For the price, these are the coolest little HMIs you can buy. Integration with a CLICK is seamless and easy. Don't know about other PLC connections. Changing the screen color via PLC tags is priceless and an easy way to indicate run/stop/alarm, etc. from a distance. All in all an awesome little unit for OEM or small integration projects.
