I hook them up to 0-10v, 4-20mA and 0-5v analog signals, like from a pressure transducer or flow meter output, and then use this as a simple controller with upper and lower setpoints to send a signal to a PLC. It works well because you do not need an analog input on the PLC AND you have a live display... plus it costs about half of the price of other process controllers out there that perform the same functions. The only con is that the configuration menus are a little confusing at first until you get used to them, but this is typical for any process controller and makes this a non issue. I never bothered to use the FREE configuration software because I don't want to have to rely on a laptop all of the time. If I need to make a simple change that can be done through the front panel buttons I don't want to have to hook up the laptop and an RS-485 converter every time, especially at a customer...

Mark in ., . wrote : 6/16/09 Needed a replacement for a Partlow 1160 used as a bang-bang J-type Thermocouple controller. Used it to replace a controller whose temperature measurement had fallen out of specification. Unit installed quickly, with fewer setup steps. The unit even has a mode for on/off heating control (which means you don't have to go through the PID setup at all). The only difference, is that when establishing a new set point, you have to press an additional "set key" for it to take the new set point value. Most of the other controller I use you simply enter the new value and after 5 seconds it "assumes" that you have chosen the new set point. Not a defect necessarily, but different. There may be a way to turn it off, but I haven't found it yet.
