These gateways work great for "picking up" several drives (485) in an enclosure with one Ethernet address.
First off it works. That being said, it is not the best option. I use it on my allen bradley PLC's to communicate with E+E 071 humidity probes. The PLCs (compactlogix l33er) have an optional task that has been developed to use the ethernet port for modbus TCP and will allow me to poll the registers in the MB-gateway to grab the data that has been auto updated using the configuration screens on the Modbus RTU side. It is not really ideal to use if you want 2 way traffic. There is too much to set up and diagnose. I have recently started using ICP-DAS due to the direct Ethernet-IP support and implicit messaging for those applications. I still use this module for simpler applications but I have had intermittent failures that have been unexplained in the past and it can be annoying to diagnose. I am currently fighting some of those issues and may end up yanking it for a more robust device.1 person found this review helpful.
I tried to use it with a short cable, but it would not work. The permanently connected termination resistor was a problem. I had to use a different brand of gateway without the termination resistor. This may indicate a design problem of the RS-485 device I connected to but the gateway should have a way removing the termination resistor. It is also going to be a problem if you try to connect the gateway between two devices, you would want the termination resistors at the ends of the cable run. A bad design choice makes it very inflexible. It does work in some applications. It is easy to configure and has better diagnostics than most. If it had a switch for the termination resistor it would be a great product.
