Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

What is a PLC?
PLCs are ruggedized microcomputers with hardware and software specifically designed to perform industrial control operations. A PLC consists of two basic sections:
- the CPU central processing unit controls all PLC activity and can further be broken down into the processor and memory system
- the input/output interface system is physically connected to field devices such as switches, sensors, lights, and motors, and provides the interface between the CPU and the field devices (inputs and outputs)
PLCs are used to control machines or processes that are sequential in nature, and PLCs also can control continuous
processes that use analog I/O.

How PLCs Work
For all types of applications, the PLC performs three functions. The PLC CPU ...
- Reads input data from connected field devices through the use of its input interfaces
- Executes or performs the control program that has been stored in its memory system. Programs are typically created in ladder logic, a language that closely resembles a relay-based wiring schematic.
- Writes or updates output devices based on the program via the output interfaces.
This process, known as the PLC scan, typically continues in the same sequence without interruption, and changes only when a change is made to the control program.

ZIPLink Pre-Wired PLC Connection Cables & Modules
ZIPLinks cut PLC wiring time from hours down to minutes. The ZIPLink system eliminates the normally tedious process of wiring programmable logic controller I/O to terminal blocks.
- Simply plug one end of a ZIPLink cable into a DirectLOGIC I/O module and the other end into a ZIPLink connector module. It’s that easy.
- ZIPLinks use half the space, at a fraction of the total cost of terminal blocks
- ZIPLink cables and modules are available in a variety of styles to suit your needs.
Some are designed exclusively for DirectLOGIC PLCs. Others may be used with various PLC brands
- ZIPLinks are available for our most popular discrete input and output PLC I/O modules
