Detecting the temperature of gases, liquids and even physical equipment components is highly important to make sure your equipment is running smoothly. Today, let’s learn about thermocouples. So, what exactly is a thermocouple? Thermocouples are simple temperature sensors. Known for their ruggedness, wide measurement range and accuracy, these sensors are often the best choice for many applications. They consist of two dissimilar metal wires joined together. Temperature detection occurs at the connecting point of the two wires, often referred to as the “hot junction.” This can be a connection of two bare metal wires twisted together or a welded connection. In operation, the junction produces a small voltage, in millivolts, based on the local temperature and due to what’s known as the Seebeck effect. The produced voltage can be directly correlated to the temperature though the relationship is usually non-linear. Thermocouples are most commonly available with three junction types: exposed, grounded, and ungrounded. The exposed junction gives you the fastest response time but should not be used in any corrosive environments. Grounded thermocouple's junctions are welded to the protective sheath or process connection and are fast to respond but can be susceptible to electrical noise. Ungrounded junctions are the slowest to respond as they are electrically isolated from the probe yet still protected from the process. Remember to use the proper thermocouple extension wires that match the type of sensor being used when wiring a thermocouple into your PLC or transmitter.
