Unlock the power of port mirroring—a must-have tool for network troubleshooting, traffic analysis, and device monitoring. In this video, AutomationDirect explains how Ethernet switch port mirroring works, why it’s essential for diagnosing communication issues, and how maintenance teams, engineers, and IT professionals rely on it to gain real-time visibility into network behavior.
You’ll learn:
What port mirroring is
How switches duplicate network traffic
How to select source and destination ports
Why mirrored ports should only be used for monitoring
How port mirroring helps diagnose slowdowns, errors, and automation device communication
How security tools use mirrored traffic for intrusion detection

Port mirroring is simple to configure, powerful to use, and essential for effective network monitoring—especially in industrial automation.

AutomationDirect presents: What Is? Networking edition What is Port Mirroring? Whether you're troubleshooting a network issue, analyzing traffic, or monitoring device behavior, port mirroring provides an easy way to see exactly what’s happening on your network. At its core, port mirroring allows a switch to take all the traffic flowing through one port—or even several ports—and make a copy of that traffic. The switch then sends that copy to another port where a monitoring device is connected. That device might be a laptop running a packet analyzer, a security appliance, or a dedicated network monitoring tool. This technique is especially useful because switches normally forward traffic only to the destination device. That makes networks efficient, but it also means you can’t simply plug in and ‘listen’ to traffic the way you could with older hubs. Port mirroring solves that problem, giving you complete visibility into the data passing through selected parts of your network. Setting up port mirroring typically involves choosing a source—the port or VLAN you want to observe—and a destination port, sometimes called the mirror or monitor port. Once configured, the switch duplicates every incoming and outgoing packet from the source and sends it to the destination. This capability is invaluable for tasks like diagnosing slow network performance, catching intermittent errors, or verifying communication between automation devices such as PLCs, HMIs, drives, or industrial PCs. Security teams also rely on port mirroring to feed intrusion detection systems with real, unfiltered network traffic. It’s important to remember that the destination port should be used only for monitoring, not normal communication. Because it receives a high volume of mirrored traffic, connecting a regular device there can lead to overloads and unexpected behavior. By providing real-time insight without interrupting network operation, port mirroring has become a go-to tool for maintenance teams, engineers, and IT support staff. It offers a safe, efficient, and non-intrusive way to diagnose problems and optimize performance across your network.
