When wiring an application using stranded wire, it is important to consider using ferrules. So, what exactly makes a ferrule a ferrule? The dictionary website denotes two definitions of the word. A ring or cap, usually of metal, put around a slender shaft to strengthen it or prevent it from splitting, or a metal sleeve used for joining or binding one part to another, such as pipe sections or the bristles and handle of a brush. Today, let’s focus on these ferrules - tin-plated copper tube with a polypropylene-fluoropolymer insulated collar at the cable insertion end. These accommodate wires ranging from 20 AWG to 1 AWG and come in many colors and variations. Though they’re all included in one category, every ferrule is different. Ring terminals, butt connectors, and pin terminals are all considered part of the ferrule family. Also, part of this ferrule family is the metal sleeve holding an eraser or the plastic collar at the tip of a pool cue that secures the tip to the stick. That won’t help much with industrial wiring! To apply a ferrule, strip your wire to the approximate length of the tube, insert all wire strands into the ferrule, crimp the metal tube portion according to manufacturer’s recommendations, and ensure a tight hold for proper connection. The shape of your ferrule crimp is selected according to your application and termination method. The square profile works better with rectangular holes and the hexagonal crimp fits better in round holes. Properly crimped ferrules provide reliable termination, clean connections, and prevent wire strands from spreading out of the terminal, possibly causing a short.
