Selecting a Precision Servo or Stepper Gearbox from AutomationDirect

In this video, we will cover Servosystem Precision Gearboxes and how to select the correct gearbox for your servo motor application. When and why would you need a precision gearbox? Servos can be used without gearboxes; however, some applications can benefit from the high torque output by utilizing a gearbox. The output torque is increased by direct proportion to the gear ratio. Inertia balancing is another key reason for using a gearbox. Some applications may have size restraints where a 90-degree gearbox will solve a mounting space issue. Planetary gearboxes use high precision helical planetary gears that offer very low backlash and are built for accuracy and reliability. Using a precision gearbox allows for slower output speeds without strain on the servo motor. Here at AutomationDirect, we currently carry 2 styles of precision gearboxes. We offer Precision gearboxes for servomotors in Inline, right angle and inline with hub style output. We also offer precision gearboxes that fit small NEMA motors such as servomotors, stepper motors or small DC motors. All of our SureGear gearboxes are supplied and filled with lubrication. They are lubricated for life and no grease change is necessary. These gearboxes are not field serviceable. Our Sure Gear Planetary Gearboxes as mentioned are available in: Inline PGA series Right Angle PGB series Inline with Hub Style output (no shaft) PGD series. All three of these styles come in 5:1, 10:1, and 15:1 ratios and have an input flange sized to fit our SureServo line of servomotors. AutomationDirect offers several options for selecting the correct gearbox for your SureServo motor. If you follow the link on our webpage, you will find an interactive online selector tool. Lets take a look: (demo selector tool) The easiest way to locate all our selector tools is to go to our home page product info product selectors. Let's scroll down to the SureGear Gearbox Selector. Here we can enter our desired torque requirements or pick one of AutomationDirect's servo motors. Here we select one of our Motors: The SVL-207 low inertia motor. Next, we can select our required output speed, or pick a gear ratio. We pick gear ratio 10:1. This gives us 3 different gearboxes we can select from. Currently they are displaying inline, right angle and hub style. If we select Right Angle only, we have the correct gearbox shown for our application: PGB090-10A3. To clear all of our data, simply refresh the screen. This selector tool only has our SureGear precision gearboxes and does not include our NEMA style gearboxes. Automation Direct also offers Precision Gearboxes for small NEMA Motors in the PGCN Series. These will ONLY work with NEMA servo motors, NEMA stepper motors and other small NEMA motors. These NEMA frames will not match up to non NEMA style motors. They are available in NEMA 17, 23 and 34. The NEMA gearboxes are only available as inline shaft gearboxes. Our NEMA gearboxes are available in 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 to 1 ratios. They offer a very low backlash and have a 20,000-hour service life. These are maintenance free as well.
