AutomationDierct.com offers line reactors and output filters for all your drive applications Line reactors are single stage transformers that provide electrical isolation without any change in voltage. Line reactors are used with AC drives both on the input and output side of the drive. On the input side, line reactors help protect the drive from voltage spikes and transients and they help prevent the drive itself from inducing transients back on the power lines where they may disrupt other equipment. On the output side (between the motor and the drive), line reactors protect the motor insulation against IGBT reflective wave damage. Output line reactors also smooth the current waveform into the motor, allowing the motor to run cooler. They are recommended for any motors where the length of wiring between the AC drive and motor is less than 100 feet. For AC Drive-to-Motor wiring distances over 100 feet or when enhanced protection from harmonics is critical to the application, use of the VTF series output filter is recommended. AutomationDirect VTF series drive output filters protect motors and cables by combining a standard load reactor with a patented low pass filter dampening circuit. This increases the voltage rise time, which prevents voltage spikes from exceeding 1,000V. In a typical Drive/Motor wiring circuit, voltage pulses can be reflected back in the direction from which it arrived. As these reflected waves encounter other waves, their values add, causing higher peak voltage. As wire length or carrier frequency increases, the overshoot peak voltage also increases. Peak voltages can be 3 to 4 times the system voltage. For example, a 480V drive/motor system could see spikes of up to 1600V. These high peak voltages can cause a rapid breakdown of motor insulation, leading to motor failure. Use of the VTF guarantees maximum spikes of 150% of line voltage.
