AutomationDirect.com sells an incredible selection of motors from a wide range of brands to fit most any application. Let’s take a brief look at motor types to help in your selection. First, a look at motor enclosures. Open drip proof or ODP, totally enclosed fan cooled - or TEFC - and totally enclosed non-ventilated, or TENV, are the 3 most common motor enclosures Open drip proof – or ODP – are great at cooling themselves. They are designed to have cooling air run through them and are drip proof meaning they are designed to route water away from the motors internals when mounted in the proper orientation. Remember that ODP motors are not designed for wet environments, they are made to handle the occasional drip or accumulation of condensation. In a dirty or wet environment, you'll probably want to use a totally enclosed fan cooled motor - or TEFC motor - as opposed to an ODP motor. Enclosed motors might cost a little more, but they save you money in the long run because they won't get fouled with dirt and grime that can lead to premature failure. TENV motors are sealed like a TEFC motor but do not have a fan. These can be ideal in very dirty environments that have airborne debris that could build up on the fan such as areas with paint, wax, glue or the like that will build up on equipment. If you have a wash-down application like a food processing plants or something like that, then look at stainless steel or enameled cases like the Ironhorse stainless steel or Leeson Watchguard motors. These are designed to minimize corrosion and handle washdown conditions. As far as motor construction, rolled steel motors are the least expensive and probably the best choice for most general-purpose applications at lower horsepower. Rolled steel motors can be ODP, TEFC or TENV. Cast iron motors from AutomationDirect are general purpose motors, but can handle the larger horsepower applications because they have things like bigger bearings, cooling fins that are part of the case so you get better thermal transfer, lots of little things like that designed specifically to get you the best possible performance which saves you money on operating costs. These are available in TEFC and TENV options. So if you want more performance and durability, then definitely consider the cast iron motors from AutomationDirect. We also have cast aluminum motors. These are similar to cast iron motors but are great for inverter duty applications because they are so good at removing heat. Farm Duty motors are TEFC rolled steel motors that are a great option for any single-phase application. These are available in larger HP than other single-phase motors and have a wide voltage tolerance. They’re really not just for farms, they are great for agitators, augers, compressors, conveyors, feeders, hoists, grinders, blowers and other equipment.
