When we are monitoring or troubleshooting XG5000 code, often it is necessary to find where variables may be used in a program. There are two easy ways to do this. We can use the “Used Device” tab of the information window to search for any uses of a specific direct variable. We can also use the Cross Reference tab to search for any variable and see where and how it is used. To add a variable to the “Used Device” tab, we can go to the tab in the lower right corner of the screen and click “Refresh.” This will open the “Select Area” pop-up window. In this window we can select one or more direct variable types, and then choose how to display the data by using the “Device Type” dropdown. As we can see in our program, we are using the direct variables %IW0.0.0 bit 0, and the %QW0.0.0 bit 0 in our program. The number for each bit shows the number of times the bit is used throughout our project. If we double click on the number, it will open the “View Device Uses” pop-up window. This window gives detail on every instance of the bit that we selected. If we are interested in viewing a specific location in the logic, we can either double click on it, or highlight it and click “Go to.” The Cross Reference tab of the Information window shows us any results of a cross reference search. To perform one, we can right-click on any object in the logic and select “cross reference selected device.” This will show us every place that a variable is used in the project, but unlike the "Used Device" tab, it will work for any variable, not just a direct variable. Similar to the “Used Device” tab you can see the location shown in the cross reference tab by either double clicking the line, or right-clicking it and selecting “Find.”
