Hello and welcome to Automation Talk where you have the opportunity to see and hear live what's happening here at Automation Direct if this your first time joining us. We thank you for logging in the hope you'll enjoyed today's Atomation Talk show. As you know, my name is Shane Crider and I will be your host. Alright, like I said we are going to jump right in today because we've got a lot of pack in and and with the short time allowed and as you know this is a recorded onee. We're not doing this one live, just because we've got a lot of work on it and we want to try to get it out as quickly as possible verses trying to put it in the line up with all of our live seminars what we've got is our advanced features and remote access and control with our C-more touch panels and helping give this presentation actually going to give all the presentation, i'm just here to do the intro and the outtro, Mr. Tim Roberts. He's from our business development team Tim as come over and help us before with some of the other seminars and we want to welcome him back. I'm going to hand it over to Tim and let him take off and I'll try to control slides and keep up with him. Tim what do you got for us? Alright, thanks Shane as Shane said today we will be covering the advanced features of the C-more touch panel and with particular attention given to the remote access and control feature Shane is gonna controls slides as we go through them We are going to talk about the advanced features We really have these divided out. One is the built in web server that a lot of touch panels now have in addition you can send email using the C-more It also has an FTP server. We will talk with some brevity on some of these things just a brief nature but there's also this simultaneous communication to other PLC platforms. A lot of folks don't realize that the C-more can do that. So we will touch on that. Also the panel pass through feature and I'll just mention here at this point the audio output Some of our customers are using C-more, they'll have hooked up just an amplifier with speakers and have the touch panel talk to you and play wave files. and communicate, yeah exactly, with the operator. So let's dive rigt in. As Shane said we have got a bit to cover. First of all, is just the web server functionality in the C-more panel the the benefit of this, a lot of times you hear webserver it means different things to different different folks but depending on how you are using it here's here's a quote from an actual OEM customer which I think puts in pretty succinctly, he said that compared to relying on hearing a verbal description the same feature the webserver allows them to also give their customers much better insight into what's happening in their plant when they call in asking questions So for instance, with this OEM he hass got his touch panel on his system shipping these things all over the world and their end customers using them he can connect remotely and then pull up and view the screens that are actually being displayed on the touch panel view them live and he can walk them through the troubleshooting and so forth okay let's go to the next one also this is pretty simple, it can send email Now with that, I want to meantion the caveat anytime you're you're doing email or FTP or any other type of internet related operation you do have to set up the panel in terms of the ethernet protocol. You know you have to go through and set up if there's firewall you work with your IT folks if you're not familiar with that and to get into your plant network expose it to the outside but all that being done the touch panel can email and another cool feature about this is that you can embed data. So you can have an email at the touch panel send send an email for instance indicating that tank temperature, like we show here, the temperature of this particular tank is not only high, but you can actually embed the value in there, so then the tech support guy or the facilities support person at that factory can then to see that if for instance on on their blackberry or iphone whatever pops up tells 'em exact condition that trigger that email so very powerful feature in terms of been able to send email Ok, lets see, next the FTP server and what this will do for you is access first log data and then retrieved that log data remotely anywhere using internet connection again provided that you get it the normal steps of exposing that touch panel to the outside world in terms of its internet connection so it does have FTP and we will show how you get at that in just a moment okay nothing as I mentioned is the ability to C-more has to talk to multiple PLC platforms at the same time so here we're showing connection via DH45 it looks like a slick and then a micro logic and you have some of our PLCs down at the bottom and it is doing this all the same time which is again very it's like having a protocol bridges is the way it functionally operates We are not limited to one brand of PLCs. You get a lot of blend depending on what machines came where so exactly I was a at a factory, I'll tell you a quick story, I was at a factory back around 2004 or '05 and this place was like a just a walking, talking museum of different PLCs brands and they had different assembly lines you know one PLCs, I won't name all the ones that are there but just the normal ones you could think off of the top your head they had literally lines of machines that had those various touch panels. Nut the cool thing with the C-more is that you could take that to an existing factory or situation like that and access all of those PLCs and get data you could put them all one screen you could have it talking to different PLCs at same time so it's a very powerful feature being able to do multiple PLCs. Let's go to the next slide a panel pass through, this is another powerful feature that often goes unnoticed or may not apply to through a lot of applications but if you look the way I like think about it is if you have PLC that only has one serial port but you need multiple touch panels on it and in the past you were just stuck you know with with serial communication only to that touch panel the cool thing about C-more is with the built-in ethernet the models that do have ethernet by the way we are not going to go into those details, but when you go onto web site you can find very quickly the ones that are higher feature panels that have built-in ethernet. You don't have to buy an extra card the ones that have that will allow you to tie off of that ethernet port another C-more panel even though your PLC can't support having another touch panel the C-more itself can so that's a very powerful feature as well. So as you mentioned not all of the C-more panels have ethernet but out say that the great majority of them, there are few that don't have ethernet capability. That is true. If you just point at them there on the website more than likely will be looking at those that do have. Be sure that you do, make sure that it is ethernet capable or ethernet equiped. Let's go to the next slide. Here, now we're going to dive in a little bit to what we call the remote access, the remote access and control functionality of the touch panel. It shows it here. You can see touch panel being accessed over the internet on your pc now some of these features weren't really launched when the launch the product itself some of these features have been added isn't remote access one of the latest ones? I mean it's been out for a little but it was one that we added based on customer feedback, there was a couple of OEMs that really had to have this feature and they came to us and said look can you add this to C-more and we worked with them and and did add the feature and then released it to to the mass market. And what is nice, I know a lot of folks ask why didn't you release this feature when you first came out with the product but sometimes we're not real sure exactly... we have in our mind how we want it to be built or created but that's not always what the customer wants You will go to buy something and you will be like that's nice, but I wish it was this way, but you just deal with they are selling. So a lot of times will hang on to a couple of higher-end features even though we've got them developed and we'll try to cater to the customers needs so as we get customer feedback, okay we want to do this, this, and this. Then we'll sort of cater that new feature and then release. Exactly we'll build it in based on the need and feedback that we get an a and by the way that underscores just how important feedback is we really appreciate folks going on the website calling up tech support and just giving their feedback and their request about additional product features and functionality. If we don't have what you need, we need to know that so that we can then add that functionality later Lets go ahead and dive into the remote access First we'll talk a little bit about the benefits this will allow authorized users. We'll be careful about this because we don't want to come across that once you have used this feature you've exposed your touch panel to anybody and everybody. We';; talk a little about security but it will allow authorized users to connect the pc to the C-more panel from anywhere in the world via the internet Just using the browser which in an export tends to be the most popular so we list that as an example but then the remote user can then fully operate and monitor. So not just access but actually control the touch panel remotely and this could reduce the need for the user to to up on a plan to fly out to actually see the the touch panel operation being able to do it remotely it can save time money and everything else so so you can control the touchscreen operation as if you're touching the panel itself We are going to demonstrate that a bit later. Just before the cameras started rolling, I was just thumbing through to make sure I knew which touch panel we were going to control because this could literally be anywhere in the world where we're literally going through the internet to get there so we will demonstrate that feature in just a minute You can also monitor in real time and some folks just want to be able to access it. They don't necessarily want to control it they just want to access it. They just want to see what the operator seeing certain state of the machine at a given time to be able to troubleshooting and to be able to walk a customer through the various steps that they're doing in the operation of the machine so it's great for troubleshooting and testing if you're a systems integrator it's that or being able to do that is a very, very powerful feature you can view, zoom, print, and save screens so in addition to the the remote access you can do those types of activities as well this eliminates having to connect to the PLC and gather data with an expensive software package that's another featured that sort of comes as a fringe benefit of this functionality. The HMI project also be configured so that the local operator can enable and disable control this is very important because one of the the pieces of feedback again that we got from OEMs when we first started rolling this out in beta about a couple years ago was that they wanted to be able to disable it say somebody has taken over control of the touch panel even the maintenance guys out at office has taken control of it and the operator standing there but he needs to do a particular thing with that machine. He doesn't have the maintenance guy on the phone and the maintenance guy has control of touch panel. Oh no! What do we do? Well it could be configured so that that person can then take back control of it so that's a very important thing to note. Again we want we want to make it a safe and secure as we possibly can for the end user, because at the end of the day they're the ones that we gotta keep happy Ok, no matter whether we are integrators or OEMs okay let's go to the next slide again just to summarize the features there is no additional hardware or pieces of hardware required operate this it is web browser-based. So virtually every PC that I know of connected to the internet is going to have a web browser multilevel login security We'll touch a metal a bit later multilevel access control so again we'll put as many levels of security and control access into this feature as we possibly can, it's user configure TAG support and then also you can resize, we'll show this little bit later, the console window you can do screen captures, open multiple viewer consoles we are going to actually we are going to demonstrate this because I will connect all the touch panels in here via the pc but you can connect to and then view multiple touch panels at the same time on a pc, which again is very powerful and custom connection setup. So lets roll through and see what's next. Okay the security. This is what I touched on a moment ago is the fact that here we are showing the three user accounts you've set up three separate counts. It's got firewall support. You can go in and and then set up different levels of control. You can allow a person to just monitor just view screens he can actually monitor and access and then have full control So if you do full control you're then operating that panel just as if you were right there in front of the touch panel okay so next again web browser-based. We'll show that better a little bit later with a launch into internet explorer and pull it up go on to the next one These are just screen captures showing what I am actually going to demo in a few minutes Actually can you go back Shane, I apologized. Right here you see the I'll try to explain this again when we actually go through it, but you can see the black window up on the left is where we are going to pull up the webserver and where we are actually going to view the webserver screen html in the touch panel and then we are going to choose which way to connect to it. It's going to then attempt to run an executable and you'll get the standard windows dialog box. Iit says do you want to trust these folks. You are going to have to just trust us and click run and hope everything works. No, I am just teasing. But that is one step again and that's a good good thing with PC security it's catching executable do you want to run this and then you see the the bottom right there the actual touchscreen itself so that literally is what's running on there. You know it's going to be nerve racking the first time that engineer somebody tries without being in the plant or something and going outside and coming back. so it's very nerve racking at the first time to really try it. yeah first time I did, I was nervous. Do I click on this or not? Okay next slide... Resizable window. You could see there, its just got a standard windows sizing functionality. Click on it and you can just grab size and just choose which size screen you want. One of the things, by the way, we first showed the initial beta users this this really blew them away because a lot of competitor products out there is just one size. You can change the size thing of the window. This is really cool because you can shrink it and then put four touch panels of shortest size, or whatever size you want. It's a very useful feature Okay, you can save screen images. Sometimes that's all you want to do. Hey grab the screen so I can see what were those temperatures are, you know, what what was the speed of that particular process that was going on at that time the whatever data that you want capture multiple views as I mentioned before, this is showing actually four different touch screens at the same time just that just a screen capture on a pc and you can see those operating in running in their various windows custom COMM setup. I won't talk much about that... You can go and you can can tweak you know, based on the data and what you're displaying. You might be displaying you know, two hundred analog values or a bunch of bitmaps. and you might play around with the speed, timeouts, and so forth and configure that to optimize your viewing. Right. and you scrolling through different screens on the touch panel. Yes, sometimes you don't care how fast the updates are as long as you are getting accurate update. Right, exactly. Some people want really fast information stream. Right you can customize that. Ok, requirements... I'll tell you what lets pause here. I am just going to dive in and show you We are just going to run the touch panel C-more software. Ok so here you see my mouse moving no screen no smoke and mirrors here. This is the real deal okay so what we're going to do here we've got got nothing open. We are just going to click start project and we're going to view touch panels here that we can see there is the autotorium and you can see different guys with their's out there. This video... This is the twelve inch panel in front of me Yeah, you can see the picture in picture Okay, there. Okay he has got it up there so I'm gonna right click there and you notice hopefully the resolutions is good enough here on the on the video. There is webserver and FTP server We're gonna connect via web server and here's the very screen that I mentioned it automatically pulled up windows explorer opened a window there you can see file list, screen list, and instructions for creating your own website site. All that stuff is built in to help users work through this on their own. They might want to customize as a couple of OEMs have done that many have done that, but two that I personally know that utilize this as they build their own webpages for their touch panel for their customers and I'm just gonna click here on remote access and here the two options I mentioned earlier you've got no firewall router connection and then you have with firewall. Since we are just behind our firewall Its just a direct connection. I am going to click here There is a "Do you want to run it? Do you trust them" I'm gonna click run Oh yeah, there's a second executable. Same thing just click that and we're going to use test3, this is the third level which has full control click that and automatically there's the touch panel window So the pointer here Its working literally just like my finger would here in front of the touch panel. I click on that, you see it operate lets see if I can reach out do something off the cuff. You can see my finger here I'm pressing that one. now I am going to press it through the software deactivated So if I am really lazy I can reach with the pointer rather than stand up and pressed it. This is done all over the internet no you know, connecting through software and software controling it Right, exactly. That is a good point that shane is making We're literally running this through We've connected through the browser and and it's running executable on a pc no additional software is required. So your end users not having to you're not having to download anything and neither is the end user. You're accessing that touch panel over the internet with no additional software so here you can see it operating remotely pretty quick too can depending on how this is setup here's the we can size do the fit was pretty close there. We go to really small go big just choose fit in this case pretty good choice so there you go. There you have it. We're connected remotely to this touch panel and and by the way you can see right there the account three is activated so we test three which is the full for control alrighty make some coffee somebody says okay I didn't know what was going to come up Mark's coffee tank. Alright so there we go. We're tracking the so its looking good, the coffee is getting complete here ok so we can pause operation by the way of the remote access we could stop it completely and restart it you restart, it's gonna push it back out to the level where you're having to enter your password because it's firing it back up again so there you have it I'm just going to head back to the touch panel software in the C-more software so that's it. Even just from a blank screen you can get at the touch pannel you don't have to load anything down to No project has to be created or anything Its just run right off the panel very powerful okay lets head back to the regularly scheduled presentation. So I'll I'll just mention here ... on the requirements obviously the remote access features as Shane alluded to earlier this was a feature that was added later so you may have an older touch panel they didn't have this featured terms of its firmware support or software for that matter but just go to the website and upgrade for free. Absolutely go to the software downloads and you can download the updated version of the C-more yeah unlike a lot of manufactures ours, the firmware is always free upgrades Absolutely. Most of our softwares, as long as you are in the same version are always free too. Now Yeah, its only when we release something directly new that we would come out with a whole new version you have to pay for an upgrade. Yep, but other than that we always have maintainence upgrades that are always free. Absolutely So even this refers to the firmware version being two point four, what I was going mention is the most recent version of software is usually the safest bet. Download that and then upgrade your firmware whatever we have on the website is going to be well up to date. Do you know what the lastest is? I believ that 2.4 is the latest of the software Actually you can go to.. If... Can you guys go to his screen capture? and if you go back and software it'll actually tell, won't it? If you go to help? this obne here is 2.52 so if you aren not sure what version you have, just go to help You can always go to the help and about C-more and you'll see that version If you'll just go download the latest version of software and then connect to your panel and upgrade the firmware in your panel and you aregoing to be good to go in terms of using the remote access feature next slide and safety note. This is one again one concerns really had was making sure that the customer and the user of the software is well aware of the safety precautions required for this because obviously you would be very careful how you how you access and and control remotely a touch panel just be safe out there information resource Yeah, I think that we are at the end there I know it sort of did roll through little quicker we made it seem a little easy but it's a really cool feature really powerful feature Tim did a good job in showing how easy it was to go in I know Tom and I actually we sat down with one of the engineers and he gave us a three-ring binders. and we sat there for maybe two hours with him he showed us, but you know course, every in and out the features what you can and can't do exactly and you can go a lot deeper a lot deeper than we went today but I just want to give you guys a sense so that you feel confident you go out and give it a try. You know, just get your C-more and connect to it and hopefully we'll generate some ideas of how you might use a touch panel beyonf what you're doing today. One of the biggest things, like you said we are more and more trying to cut down on travel you know for some web seminar so people quit traveled to trade shows or training and stuff like that and an online training, and in the industrial world with we've tried to keep our technicians at home where they can do more work you know for less money right and now the technicians were able to actually visit the plan floor without ever visiting you know without being physically there so you can do that with a lot of PLCs as well yep but but the C-more of them and it's an awesome feature. Yeah, to actually be able to operate the touch panel A remote customer might say that their machine isn't doing this. Yeah, well let me show you. And walk you through this. He might not even charge you. It is a very powerful feature but you're right we could have gone a whole lot deeper. I just wanted to skim the surface just to give you an idea of how easy it is, because I was very rusty on this I mean right before I don't know if you realized this, I was just making sure I was clicking on the right thing but it is very straightforward. You've got a simple right click there to access the web server and you'r connected through HTML there, you click on it to run the remote access. to run executable and you're off and running just the way we showed it. Yeah, I wanted to just show how seamless it is, really, you aren't having to the download something, wait, and install its just happening right there, so do it with whatever's on your computer okay, cool, we are going to go ahead and stop. Liked, Tim, said sort of went through this pretty quick. I think Tom and I are going to work on some learn videos, we are actually try to diving with product this will help from some of the other guys, maybe Tim and Richard. We'll try to break it down and do more in depth of okay here's how you can do this here's how yoy can do that. You did a really great job with showing it and you know the features of it and giving everybody a taste of the C-more and if you don't have one go out and get it. If you don't have the C-more touch panel that has the ethernet, you know, grab one with the the ethernet, like I said, there's only a couple, a small handful, that don't have ethernet if you do have ethernet capabilities, which like you sad, they are built-in on all the higher end ones, you have the ability to do this that as long as you go out and get the latest firmware and software which is free but so we'll stop there, Information Resources, as you cab see there of course I can't email you these because we're not live we're doing this in a recorded format, but you can always pause this vidio and jot those down, but you see there's a C-more comparison chart. We do have the C-more website if you've never been there The demo software, you can actually, it's fully functional it will allow, you know, go in and program anything there and then we have our video tutorials. If you're not familiar with them they are at out learn site at learn.automationdirect.com And we are trying to put more and more up Right now, I think me and Tom are focusing on the Click PLC and trying to get as much out with that now we're gonna start trying to bring up some of the productivity 3000 our newest PLC that we just released just a couple weeks ago Alright and then we have a application not that a lot of customers will ask for stuff and tech will do a good job. If they get repetitive phone calls, They will actually write some app notes, so you will want to check out the app notes and on the forum as well. A lot of times, you know, if techs been getting a lot of phone calls about the C-more remote feature they will actually sit down and write some white papers and howto's Okay and we are going to the last one. But again I am going to thank you fo coming in and doing such a great job, again Time. You're always do a great job with that. Of course since this is recorded, we will not have a poll, we wo'nt have a Q&A. Now let me make a suggesting here if you have, since we aren't having a Q&A if you have any questions or any feedback for us, feel free to email me and that's that firstname.lastname@example.org and that comes to me. We will be glad to answer any questions you have also feel free to call our tec support Let me go ahead and we'll close out. Our other engineers got music. Thanks again for watching today's edition of Automation Talk. Please make sure you visit our web site at automationdirect.com Feel free to browse the site and shop in our industry leading catalog that keeps growing everyday. We are going have, wiat, two thousand plus part numbers this year. That we have released. So take a look there. Make sure you check out the Automation Talk website for seminars. Tom and I sat down today and have come out, we got them lined up for the rest of the year, but we only post four at a time but we would like to see everybody we can come lineup and watch our Automation Talk seminars live question and comments, like I said, can be sent to me at email@example.com Until we have a chance to speak to you again, Thanks and have a great day!
