How to use the Productivity3000

In this set of videos we’ll use the Productivity3000’s HSI module – or High Speed Input Module - to detect the index hole in this sprocket with this proximity sensor, wait some number of sprocket teeth as detected by this proximity sensor, then flash this strobe light. We added a little Automation Direct Smiley Face to mark the index hole location. When we run the motor, we get a timing light effect that appears to freeze the sprocket while the motor runs at high rpms. By changing the delay, we freeze the sprocket in different locations. This is a much higher speed example than you would typically encounter, but it does show off just how capable this module is and how easy it is to use. This type of registration activity is very common in automation environments where maybe you want to detect the leading edge of a box, wait a while then apply a label. There are lots of applications for this kind of registration activity. In part II of this video we will show you how to do the registration on this sprocket using these proximity sensors, and in Part III we will do the same registration activity but using this quadrature encoder, and then we’ll do it again using both the quadrature encoder AND the Proximity sensors. Before we get started though, let’s take a quick look at the hardware. For this demo we are using this Variable Frequency Drive, or “VFD,” to drive an AC Motor with a 36 tooth sprocket on it completely independent of the Productivity 3000. Because the motor is independent, the Productivity 3000 has to rely on sensors fed into its HSI module for all of its information. In particular, we have this proximity sensor counting the teeth on the sprocket, another proximity sensor detecting this index hole. Those are on channel 2 of the HSI card. We also have an encoder on channel 1 of the HSI Card, and an array of white LEDs that we will us as a strobe light connected to Output 1 and a green array of LEDs connected to Output 2. That’s enough for the intro – head on over to Part II where we will configure the hardware and do a live demo using the Proximity Sensors. Performance plus Value … That’s Productivity.
