Isolators and barriers provide intrinsic safety through galvanic separation or by diverting energy between the control system and various field devices. These isolators/barriers only allow a safe amount of energy to reside in the electrical circuit so that no sources of ignition are created.

Intrinsically Safe Isolators and Barriers
When automated systems are installed in potentially explosive atmospheres (ex. oil and gas production), extra precautions must be taken to ensure the electrical circuits do not become ignition sources. Intrinsic safety protection requires consideration of the entire electrical circuit, consisting of a current/voltage source, end devices, and connecting cables. To maintain the integrity of an intrinsically safe system with field devices such as sensors, transmitters, or valves, intrinsically safe isolators or barriers are also required. Endress+Hauser and STAHL isolators/barriers only allow a safe amount of energy to reside in the electrical circuit so that no sources of ignition are created.

Intrinsically safe isolation barriers provide galvanic isolation and safe transmission of analog signals from process instruments in hazardous areas.
- Digital input and output, analog input and output, frequency (including vibration), and temperature converter modules available

STAHL Zener barriers provide intrinsic safety and limit energy sent to a hazardous location by diverting fault energy as opposed to isolating the signal. A dedicated ground is required for each module.
- Intrinsically safe Zener barriers for discrete PNP and NPN signals, pulse trains, analog signals, strain gauges, load cells, and thermocouple signals
- Most modules are dual-channel
- Zener barriers save space over isolator modules
- Grounding lugs on top and bottom of module
- Binary signal barriers are HART compatible
Isolator and Barrier Accessories
Accessories for STAHL safety isolator and barrier installations include pac-Bus terminals that allow multiple modules to share a common power source. ISpac Wizard configuration software for configuring STAHL 9146, 9162, and 9182 frequency, analog, and temperature modules. Other accessories available include fuse kits and a configuration kit for select temperature, analog, and frequency modules.
