DC current shunts allow accurate measurement of high DC currents. They provide a low-resistance current path through a precision resistor that produces a small, proportional voltage drop, which an ammeter (connected in parallel) measures to provide the total current flowing through the circuit.

Sifam Tinsley B4 series DC measuring shunts enable precise measurement of high DC currents by providing a low-resistance path through a precision resistor. As current flows through the shunt, it generates a small voltage drop that is linearly proportional to the current. A shunt-rated ammeter, essentially a voltmeter calibrated with a current scale, reads this voltage drop. The ammeter’s scale is matched to the shunt’s rating, allowing accurate measurement without exposing the meter directly to high current.
