Solenoid valves are a popular control device in pneumatic and hydraulic systems and allow control of various devices using electrical signals. When an electrical current is routed through the coil of a solenoid valve, a magnetic field is generated which in turn causes an internal metal plunger, spool, etc. to move. This movement is used to either block or allow fluid flow through the valve and can work either directly or indirectly on the incoming fluid. Normally open (N.O.) solenoid valves will remain open when power is removed from the coil while normally closed (N.C.) solenoid valves remain closed. Solenoid valves come in many styles including standalone valves, and units for modular and electro-pneumatic systems. These valves utilize a variety of control voltages and provide a number of different pathways for fluid to travel in or out of the valve. Valves commonly used in industrial applications typically have a 2-, 3- or 4-way configuration.
