Safety Light Curtains (Category 4 / Type 4)
Category Selection
Light curtains protect personnel from harm and machinery from damage by utilizing an array of photoelectric beams to sense intrusion into a protected area and remove power from dangerous equipment. Safety light curtains are available for finger protection, hand protection, and body protection (access control). Type 4 / Category 4 curtains achieve high fault tolerance through redundancy/monitoring. Products are available from Contrinex, ReeR, Datasensing, and Datalogic, and include:
- 14mm resolution (space between beams) models for finger protection
- 30mm resolution models for hand protection
- 300 and 400mm resolution models for body protection/access control
- Mirror and protective columns

Mirrors & Protective Columns
Mirrors allow a single pair of light curtains to protect multiple sides of an area and reduce the number of sender/receiver pairs needed. Protective columns protect a light curtain from damage and misalignment due to being hit by machinery or personnel.
- Protective columns for body protection safety light curtains are available in up to 2020mm column height (Contrinex) or 1330mm column height (ReeR)
- Mirror columns for body protection safety light curtains are available in 3- and 4-mirror models or one continuous column-length mirror
- Mounting bases available for all column models
Muting Arms and Muting Sensors
Muting allows for the temporary suspension of a safety light curtain's function during the cycle of a machine/process when no hazard exists, or when objects are intentionally entering or leaving the area. For example, muting can disarm the safety function when pallets on a palletizing machine are exiting the protected area. Pre-configured and pre-wired muting arms and sensors are available to work with a wide selection of light curtains.
- T-type muting arms: 2 or 4 crossed beams, 2 or 4 parallel beams, one- or two-way
- L-type muting arms: 2 or 4 crossed beams, 2 or 4 parallel beams, one- or two-way
- Coded muting sensors are available in sender/receiver pairs or separately
