Rotary encoders are essential components in many modern systems, providing accurate and reliable position and motion feedback. They offer various output types, each with their own advantages, the most common types are:
- Open-collector output: Each output channel has a transistor that is turned on or off. These encoders are generally simple and inexpensive, suitable for low-noise environments and short distances.
- Push-pull (totem-pole) output: Each output channel has two transistors working in complementary pairs. These encoders provide faster switching speeds and better noise immunity.
- Differential line driver output: Each output channel has two complementary signals, one inverted relative to the other. These encoders provide excellent noise immunity, long-distance transmission capability, and high data rates.
When selecting an encoder, be sure to also consider the resolution required and the amount of shaft load. Light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty options are available, each offering different load capacities.

JTEKT Light Duty Incremental Encoders (Quadrature)
JTEKT (formerly Koyo) light-duty encoders are industrial duty encoders for applications with light shaft loading. These encoders are perfect for applications with minimal shaft loading and flexible shaft couplings.
- Resolution available from 100 pulses per revolution to 2500 pulses per revolution
- 6mm solid shaft or 8mm hollow shaft
- Small body - 38mm or 40mm diameter
- Dust proof (IP50) and water resistant (IP65) ratings

Lika Electronic medium-duty encoders provide several distinct options including compact, high-heat, and programmable encoders, as well as encoders designed for large AC motors.
- A50 series units are designed to withstand high temperature environments up to 100 C (212F) with ¼ inch or 3/8 inch hollow shafts, in resolutions from 360 up to 2048PPR
- A80 series encoders are designed to fit large AC motors, with a 30mm hollow shaft and 1024 PPR resolution; a selection of reducer bushings is available to accommodate metric or SAE shafts (5/8" to 30mm)
- AQ5x series medium duty encoders have programmable resolution from 1 to 16,384 PPR, have a 58 mm or 59 mm body diameter, and either a 3/8 inch solid shaft or a 15mm hollow shaft; reducer bushings are available to accomodate metric and SAE shafts from 6mm to 15mm

JTEKT Medium Duty Absolute Encoders (Gray Code)
JTEKT (formerly Koyo) absolute encoders use gray code (a version of binary where the outputs only change state one bit at a time) to describe each position, so position data is not lost when power is cycled AND the response frequency is slower for a given resolution.
